Lesson Plan
I have attached a lesson plan that one of my classmates and I created for our Special Education Methods class. It does have a rubric and other documents we would use in our lesson. I can not attach a document (at least not that I can figure out) so I am going to upload the document to see how this works.
Literacy Lesson Plan
- Author(s) of lesson: Jennifer Denham & Arista Easley
- Subject: English
- Topic or Unit of Study: This is a unit based on Perseverance where students use comprehension, prediction, and summarization skills. Students will also practice writing skills.
- Grade level: 6th grade
- Lesson Duration: This unit may take 6 weeks depending on the reading levels of the class. The entire book would be read both at school and home and individually and in small groups.
- Goal: Students will gain a better understanding of perseverance and survival; improve comprehension skills, understand the author’s point of view; and gain more vocabulary.
- Objectives:
·
Given instruction
students will be able to relate their personal experiences to the story Hatchet and write a simple
paragraph about the relation.
·

English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 6,
(6) Reading/Comprehension
of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw
conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence
from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to:
(A) summarize
the elements of plot development (e.g., rising action, turning point, climax,
falling action, denouement) in various works of fiction; (B) recognize
dialect and conversational voice and explain how authors use dialect to convey
character; and (C) describe different forms of point-of-view,
including first- and third-person.
- Reflective Procedures (these may be arranged in a different order, taught over more than one day, or adapted in other ways to fit different types of lessons, e.g. direct instruction, discovery): After a chapter or reading portion is read there will be class discussion or small group discussion for reflection. Some activities might include different aspects of the reading portion summarized on chart paper, YouTube videos of perseverance and survival, and the reading response logs.
- Preassessment: On chart paper the teacher will write the word “PERSERVERANCE”; students will discuss the meaning, or what they feel is the meaning of the word, and write the ideas on the chart paper.
- Motivation: Show the video - TeacherTube Book Talk
- Statement of Purpose: Show quick PPT of perseverance quotes.
- Teacher Modeling or Demonstration: The teacher reads a passage aloud and opens discussion of the passage(s).
- Guided Practice: Students will complete one section of the “Guided Notes” after reading each chapter.
- Check for Understanding: Students will define vocabulary and write new sentences using the words; small groups will use chart paper to either draw a picture depicting the reading passage or create a story web.
- Independent Practice: Students will complete a “Reading Response Log” after each of the reading assignments.
- Closure: Students will be able to write two short stories based on perseverance/survival (one from a first-person point of view and one from a third-person point of view).
- Differentiated instruction:
·
Students who receive
special education services will be able to read the book in an adapted form
(text and pictures) and create their own modified journal pages.
·
ESL students will be
able to work on vocabulary to gain a better understanding of the text and may
use the adapted version of the book.
·
GT students will
create a poster based on perseverance using poetry to grasp the meaning of the book.
